Access to skilled labour in rural areas
Vocational education has received a great deal of social and political attention in recent years. This is mainly due to the recognition that there will be a shortage of skilled labour in the near future. The shortage of skilled labour is caused by a combination of many older skilled workers leaving the labour market and too few new graduates hatching. There has therefore been a great deal of focus on increasing the search for, as well as ensuring greater implementation of, vocational training. With this publication, the Centre for Regional and Tourism Research wants to focus on the geographic aspects of vocational training and of the current challenges of ensuring access to skilled labour in different parts of the country. In particular, the publication seeks to answer what the presence of a local main course and a local internship means for EUD students' mobility patterns, as well as to increase our understanding of the mobility dynamics that characterize the vocational education system. Particular focus is placed on what EUD students' mobility patterns mean for rural countries' ability to produce, retain and attract skilled learners. The study is funded by the Ministry of Enterprise's Rural Pool under the Research and Information Projects Pool and has been conducted between September 2018 and August 2019.It is our hope that both the Ministry of Education, the social partners and the vocational education institutions, all working with continuous development of the vocational education system, as well as municipalities, regions and Business promoters working to secure skilled labour for the entire country's labour markets can use this knowledge. In connection with this report, a Summary is also published as a policy brief, which will be published in September 2019.The main authors are available at all times for questions and further information.
