Carbon Footprint of Tourism in Denmark
CRT has developed the measurement method and conducted the calculations for a new Danish assessment of the carbon footprint of tourism in Denmark. This development work was commissioned by VisitDenmark as part of Denmark's strategy for sustainable growth in tourism (Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, 2022). The goal was to create a measurement method that quantifies the greenhouse gas emissions associated with tourism activities in Denmark.
The project has contributed to efforts led by the United Nations Tourism Organization (Un Tourism) to develop international statistical guidelines for measuring the sustainability of tourism, including tourism-related greenhouse gas emissions. Denmark is the first country in the world to complete a comprehensive inventory of all tourism-related emissions at the destination level, fully adhering to these guidelines.
The calculations provide valuable insight into the scope and nature of the carbon footprint of tourism, both at the national and destination levels. This information is essential for future efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of tourism in Denmark.
